On 14 December 2017 SNFL South Africa hosted a field day event in the Northern Cape to showcase the newest addition to its table grape variety offering – Ivory. It is an early-mid season, white seedless variety.
The field day was held at one of the beautiful Capespan farms, located just outside of Kakamas. With the help of Dawid Dege (general manager) and his experienced team, an opportunity was created for visitors to see and evaluate the fruit in the vineyard just before harvest. Established.
The SNFL team and chairman, Duncan Macintyre, welcomed valued clients, technical consultants, agro chemical representatives and a few new faces to the Ivory vineyard. Duncan opened the event by sharing background information about SNFL and shed some light on the world-wide production of Ivory. Experiences of the preparation and management of the variety were shared and also had a chance to point out important aspects of the developing variety protocol, which are constantly being fine-tuned based on the regional conditions. Visitors had the opportunity to walk through the block to see the fruit on the vine and tasted amazing samples sourced from commercial vineyards in Namibia and Blouputs to experience its crunchy texture and beautiful flavour. The gathering ended off with a group discussion and feedback session.
SNFL will be hosting a second Ivory field day towards the end of January 2018 in the Hex river, the latest table grope producing region of South Africa.
SNFL would like to thank Dawid Dege and his team at Capespan farms, for allowing us to host this event during a very busy time of the season. Thank you for Dippenaar Choice fruit and Namibian Grape Company for the samples and a big thank you to everyone who took the time to join us on this great day.
